In the mountain highlands of Guilin, China, hours away from the city's pollution. On the slopes of a primeval forest, protection from pests, pollution, and flood damage with optimal sunlight for plant growth. Each fruit is pollinated, grown and harvested by hand; the same traditional methods have been used for centuries. Farmers use natural pest control methods, including bottle traps and netting, instead of pesticides.
For a sustainable tradition of field cycling, the farmers rotate crops every five years, which has been proven to be the amount of time the soil yields the best fruit. After 3 years, trees are planted and grow alongside the Luo Han Guo for the remaining two years. The netting and poles for the Luo Han Guo are removed after five years, and the trees continue to grow to reforest the area.
To ensure the highest quality of Luo Han Guo, Lakanto only works with the best farmers that follow the high standards. Lakanto provides the farmers with greenhouse-grown seedlings. Seedlings are grown by the original botanists who have worked with Lakanto from the very beginning, since Lakanto’s Luo Han Guo extract was developed a few years ago. By giving the fruit a strong start, we reduce the amount of crop loss.
The Luo Han Guo are checked three times to weed out any rotten fruit:
1. In the fields, during harvest.
2. When it arrives at the processing plant.
3. Prior to washing and extraction.
At the processing plant, the fruits are visually checked for mold, size, and ripeness. Samples are sent to external laboratories and checked for more than 400 chemicals. The factory has a complete laboratory; to study and research the extraction method of Luo Han Guo to ensure that the products are safe and delicious.
